Branch 1: Creation and Covenant
Year 1/Year 2
In Vine and Branches, Branch One focuses on Creation and Covenant. Throughout this branch, pupils will learn about the story of Noah, with particular emphasis on God's covenant, or promise, with him.
Pupils will understand that God made a covenant with Noah to save all living creatures and that this promise remains an important part of Christian belief. As they explore the story, they will learn that people chose to turn away from God and behave wrongly, leading to the events of the flood.
Children will also learn about the Sacrament of Baptism, understanding that Baptism is the moment when a person becomes part of the Christian family and makes a commitment to love and follow God.
Pupils will know that the Christian Bible is divided into two main parts: The Old Testament and the New Testament.
EYFS
In Vine and Branches, Branch One focuses on Creation and Covenant. Throughout this branch, pupils will learn about the story of Creation, knowing that God made our beautiful world and everything in it. Most importantly, knowing that ‘God made me’, and that God loves everyone. As the pupils begin to appreciate our beautiful world, they will develop an understanding of their responsibility to care for our world.
English - Reading
Daily reading is a key priority in primary school and we actively encourage children to read as much as possible at home to help further develop their fluency and comprehension skills. Every child will be able to bring home a banded reading book from school. These will be assigned to children by their class teacher following a short reading assessment. These can be changed regularly in school. Every child is also encouraged to have a 'Reading for Pleasure' book.
English - Writing
In English, we will be using Look Up! as inspiration for our extended writing.
Through this text, we will focus on mastering key writing skills from previous year groups while developing our ability to write with greater accuracy and confidence. We will work on orally rehearsing our sentences before writing them down, practise using coordinating to create varied and engaging sentences, use expanded noun phrases and use specific and detailed description to ensure our writing is engaging and interesting. Throughout the unit we will be working on planning and editing out work to produce high-quality pieces of writing.
There will also be further opportunities for extended writing which develop skills across a range of genres.
Maths
In Maths, we follow Power Maths. This allows children to develop their fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills.
During this half term, our topics are:

2D and 3D shapes
Throughout the week, children are given many opportunities to practise their arithmetic skills.
Science
Our Science topic for this half term is Plants. Throughout this unit, children will practise using a variety of scientific skills to help them learn:
There are wildflowers growing in our school grounds.
All plants have roots, a stem, leaves and some plants also have petals.
Trees have roots, a trunk, branches and leaves.
Evergreen trees keep their leaves all year round.
Deciduous trees lose their leaves in summer.
History
This half term, we will be exploring:
How has the people's health of Britain changed over time?
(Victorians and Florence Nightingale) 1837-1901.
In History, we will be exploring the Victorians, Queen Victoria and Florence Nightingale. We will be focussing on the health of the people and how Florence Nightingale helped soldiers, as well as making the hospitals a cleaner, safer place for everyone. We will compare the differences between Victorian houses and hospitials and those today. We will strengthen our chronology skills and include detail in our writing when talking about events in the past, as well as being able to use and remember important dates.
Geography
This term, we will be exploring:
What is it like here?
In Geography, we will be exploring Frodsham. We will build upon our knowledge that Frodsham is in Cheshire, England. We will investigate the different places that Frodsham has that enable us to travel, create energy (windfarms, motorway, river, railway). We will discuss the places within Frodsham that have natural beauty, such as Delamere Forest, Frodsham Hill and Sandstone Trail, as well as building our skills to investigate the human and physical features of Frodsham. To conclude our unit we will carry out a walk of the local area to produce a sketch map.
Art and Design - Drawing
In Art, we will be developing our drawing skills through the exploration of tones. We will begin by refining key techniques such as adding shading to our artwork to add depth and texture. As the unit progresses we will learn how artists hold the pencil at the midpoint, loosely sketch with charcoal, begin to apply different tones (dark, mid and light) by utilising a change in pressure, as well as shading following the lines of a shape.
Music
Music sessions will be delivered by Amasing music tutors.
PE
Our P.E. day for this half term is Wednesday. Children should come to school in their kit.
All kit must be clearly labelled, and appropriate footwear must be worn. Jewellery, including earrings, must not be worn during P.E. days. School hoodies and jogging bottoms can be purchased online with school uniform.
Personal Development
At St Luke's, RHE is taught using a scheme created by 'Ten:Ten'. Our first topic is Created and Loved by God. This explores the individual. Rooted in the teaching that we are made in the image and likeness of God, it helps children to develop an understanding of the importance of valuing themselves as the basis for personal relationships.
