Welcome to Reception!
Welcome to our Reception Class page, where we will keep you up to date with the children's learning and share important information, events and photographs with you. We aim to provide a wonderful learning environment for the children in the Early Years Foundation Stage that is full of nurture, fun and engagement.
The Way, the Truth and the Life 'New Life'
The RE scheme we follow at St Luke's Catholic Primary School is ‘The Way, The Truth and The Life’, which is taught in every class. For Spring 2 lessons will be taught from the topic of 'New Life' during our weekly RE lessons. These lessons primarily focus on the time after Jesus' ascension and biblical stories linked to 'New Life'.
Please see our Reception Class prayers attached at the bottom of this class page.
Our Topic/Book this half term is 'Animals and Pets' linking to the text 'Silly Doggy' by Adam Stower.
This half term the children are completing activities based on a text about about a pet bear. The story is called 'Silly Doggy' and it descibes a little girl who finds a pet in her garden. Initially she thinks the animal is a dog but the animal is much too big to be a real pet.... This rich and interesting story has lots of excellent ideas that are developing the children's reading and writing skills. Linking to 'Understanding the World' the children will also be learning about different animals and which animals are pets and which animals live in the zoo. The children are completing various activities that link to to this text during 'busy learning time' to ensure that a range of child initiated and adult led activities are being delivered. The children are engaging with the new role play area of a 'Vets' which is extending their imagination and communication skills.
Mathematics
In Reception daily Inputs will be delivered using NCETM Mastering Number inputs supported by an additional programme called Power Maths which supports the teaching and learning for the additional topic of 'Shape, Space and Measure'. Both programmes support a mastery approach and develops all children's ability to count, order and recognise numbers in line with the revised Early Years Curriculum 2021.
PE
PE will continue to be taught on a Friday morning throughout Spring term, the skill being taught this term is 'Dance'. On the morning of your child's PE day please send your child into school wearing their PE kit. Long hair will need to be tied back and earrings must be taken out or covered with plasters.
Reading Books
Reading Books will be changed on a Monday and a Thursday. Please send your child into school with their reading book in their book bag everyday. The children will be reading books that are in line with the sounds being taught during their daily Phonics lesson/session.
Learning Book

Every child in Reception has their own online learning journey. At St Lukes we use Learning Book and your child's profile can be viewed via the 'Parent Portal'. You can login with your username (your email) and then create your own password. Observations and 'WOW' moments can be added both in school and at home.
Home Learning
Below are some websites you might find useful to explore with your child as and when you please. Please don't feel the need that they have to all be done in one go. If you explore and complete any of the activities below please feel free to upload any pictures and observations to Learning Book.
