Welcome to Class 6

Our Learning
The Way, the Truth and the Life: The Transforming Spirit

The children will know about the Ascension and what it was like for the disciples. They will understand what happened at Pentecost and how the Spirit transformed the Apostles before deepening their understanding of Peter, the Apostle, and how the Holy Spirit transformed him and worked through the Apostles, reflecting on how this experiences can help us. They will understand the transformation that took place in Paul and how his teaching can help us before finally learning that the popes are successors of St. Peter and lead us to Jesus.
English

Using our main text, Manfish, the children will write a biography of Jacques Cousteau. The children will use relative clauses beginning with who, which, where, when, whose, that or an omitted relative pronoun, use a wide range of devices to build cohesion e.g. conjunctions, synonyms, adverbials, punctuation, use a colon to introduce a list and semi-colons within lists and use hyphens to avoid ambiguity.

‘The Explorer’ by Katherine Rundell will continue to be our main reading text for this half term, with which we will develop the following skills: prediction, clarification of vocabulary, retrieval, explanation and inference.
We actively encourage all children to read as much as possible as home. Please help to support our class learning by encouraging your child to read a range of genres reguarly at home. Most children will have a reading book that is provided by school and is part of the school reading scheme. Books should be read each day at home and changed in school once finished. We encourage parents to record their child's reading using School Spider each week so that home reading can be monitored. Everybody is encouraged to have a 'Reading for Pleasure' book that they keep in their tray in school.
Spelling tests will be held weekly (on Mondays). Spellings will be uploaded to Google Classroom every Monday afternoon so that the children have a week to learn the spelling pattern. It is important that all children are practising their spelling patterns throughout the week to ensure that they go into their long term memory and can recall the spelling patterns to apply into their daily writing confidently. Children will bring their spelling book home each Monday afternoon so that their results can be shared with you and extra support can be given at home; please sign the book for your child to return on a Tuesday morning.
Geography: What is a river?
The children will understand the features of a typical river channel as it progresses along its course from source to mouth before studying a local river. They will develop their fieldwork skills and apply mapwork and graphical techniques to aid understanding. The children will then be introduced to rivers within the United Kingdom and then in Europe to understand the physical processes and how rivers impact the landscape, while looking at the way in which humans interact with rivers for a range of purposes.
PE
Our P.E. day will be on a Wednesday this half term and children should come to school in their kit on this day; the children will be working with our sports coach, Mr Curran. School hoodies and jogging bottoms can be purchased online with school uniform.
