Class 1 2018 - 2019

Welcome to Class 1

Teacher: Mr Taylor

and Mrs Cross

Our Learning

This half term we are learning all about the Naughty Bus.  This is a book written by Jan and Jerry Oak with great images that we will use as writing stimulation.  We will be looking at places visitied and even places it could visit around out school. Through the Primary Writing Project, we will be learning Pie Corbett’s instructions for ‘How to Trap a Dragon.’ We will then be using these to write our own instructions for how to trap a Naughty Bus! We will be focusing on our letter formation and applying our letters and sounds into our writing.

In Maths we will be practicing being able to count, read and write numbers to 20 in numerals and words and we will be finding one more and one less than these numbers. We will then be working on number bonds and their related subtraction facts before moving on to addition and subtraction. We will be solving problems using concrete objects and pictorial representations.

Our new The Way, the Truth and the Life topic is 'Mary our Mother'.  We will be learning  that God called Mary to be the Mother of Jesus and how she responded to God’s call.  We will focus on the words of the ‘Hail Mary’ prayer and begin discss its meaning.  We will focus on The Annunciation and other key events in her life.

PE

The children have PE every Thursday afternoon. Please ensure that your child has their kit in school and that it is clearly labelled. We will also take part in the Daily Mile every afternoon.

Homework

Homework will be sent home every Thursday and will alternate between Maths and English. This should be brought back into school the following Monday.

Reading books will be changed every Monday and Thursday, however, please ensure that your child has their book in school every day. Please listen to your child read every day and encourage them to retell the story and explain their understanding of what is read.

Every Monday, spelling books will be sent home with words that your child will be learning that week in phonics. Please encourage your child to practice these words and apply them in their writing.

Communication

I am always happy to discuss any worries, concerns or questions that you may have, so please do not hesitate to approach me. Although you can speak to me at the beginning of the day to give me any messages you may have, the end of the day offers more time for discussion so please see me once the children have been dismissed.
